Jaguar calls the F-Type Coupe the most performance-focused sports car it has made

NOT many coupés are launched after their convertible versions, and not many get as much, if not more attention, than their open-top counterparts. The Jaguar F-Type Coupé has to be an exception.

Perhaps it is the way it looks. The styling of the F-Type Coupé is an exercise in elegance. The British carmaker not only gave the F-Type a fixed roof but also a perfectly shaped rear end with a simple but graceful window line.

Because the F-Type body is made completely out of lightweight aluminium, its stunning profile actually required some engineering ingenuity to achieve.

To keep the roofline low yet make it strong enough to do without a centre pillar and still pass a rollover crash test, Jaguar added an innovative hydroformed alloy beam.

The result is a two-seater coupé that is the most torsionally rigid production Jaguar ever made.

Like the F-Type Convertible, there are three variants of the coupé - the F-Type Coupé, the F-Type S Coupé, and the F-Type R Coupé.

The flagship R Coupé has a 5.0-litre supercharged V8 engine producing 550 hp and 680 Nm, while the entry-level Coupé has a 3.0-litre supercharged V6 with 340 hp and 450 Nm.

The S Coupé also has a 3.0-litre supercharged V6 unit to drive the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission but its output lies somewhere between the other two variants - 380 hp and 460 Nm. And like Baby Bear's porridge, it is just right.

As befits its positioning, the S Coupé gets a good mix of equipment. It has Active Exhaust, sports suspension with Adaptive Dynamics variable damping, and for keen drivers, a mechanical limited-slip differential (versus the R Coupé's Electronic Active Differential).

This means that the S Coupé has more bells and whistles than the entry-level F-Type Coupé, but without the wilder side of the R Coupé. As a result, it literally offers a good balance of power and driveability.

During the media launch in Spain last month, the F-Type S Coupé displays deep reserves of torque that are accessible and relatively easy to control with a 51:49 front/rear weight distribution. The growly exhaust note is delightful and so is the eight-speeder, which is a conventional auto but shifts sweetly and rapidly in manual mode.

The F-Type has the fastest steering fitted to a Jaguar and at high speed, stability is increased with a rear spoiler that is automatically raised above 70 kmh.

For stopping power, Jaguar equips the S Coupé with the manufacturer's High Performance Braking system, distinguished by its black callipers (versus the Coupé's Performance Braking with smaller discs and silver callipers, and R Coupé's Super Performance version with bigger rear discs and red or black callipers). The S Coupé comes with 19-inch wheels as standard (the Coupé wears 18-inch alloys and the R Coupé 20 inches).

Inside, the S Coupé gets beautiful suede-lined bucket seats in a cabin that is surprisingly roomy and very ergonomic, with the same centre console and cossetting atmosphere as the Convertible.

With its combination of presence and performance, the S in the Jaguar F-Type S Coupé could very well stand for special.
