WE ASK ALEXANDER MURDZEVSKI, DIRECTOR AT VOLVO CARS, ABOUT ECU TUNING

Q1. HOW IS ECU TUNING CARRIED OUT?
ECU (engine control unit) tuning involves optimising the stock software by installing a new programme via the on-board diagnostic port. There isn’t any hardware alteration.

Q2. WHY ARE THE GAINS HIGHER IN TURBO ENGINES?
This is because turbocharged and supercharged engines have more parameters that can be altered compared to naturally aspirated ones.

Q3. CAN A RETUNED ECU IMPROVE ENGINE EFFICIENCY?
This depends on the driver. If he uses the extra torque to shift up earlier instead of accelerating harder, fuel consumption can then be reduced.

Q4. ARE THERE ANY POTENTIAL DISADVANTAGES?
If the programmer doesn’t understand the car and its systems as a whole before the tuning process, it might harm the car’s performance and reliability.

Q5. WHAT SHOULD ECU TUNERS AIM TO ACCOMPLISH?
Tuning companies such as Polestar aim for optimum driveability without exceeding the stock performance parameters of the vehicle in question.
