BMW i is all about visionary electric vehicles and mobility services, inspiring design and a new understanding of premium that is strongly defined by sustainability and pursues a holistic approach. Here are five things you didn't know about it.

1. BMW started exploring the possibility of electric cars as early as 1969 with an electrified BMW 1602. Interestingly, that's the same year the first man (Neil Armstrong) landed on the moon.

2. The BMW i8 has the first tranverse-mounted engine behind the driver in BMW's lineup.

3. Chemically hardened thin glass, which is equipped on the BMW i8, boasts impressive strength, excellent acoustic properties and weight savings of around 50 percent compared with conventional laminated glass.

4. Due to its unique architecture, the BMW i8 is the first BMW that can run on three drivetrains - front-wheel, rear-wheel, or all-wheel drive.

5. The BMW i8 is the first BMW production car with ultra-cool butterfly-style doors.
