Hakkinen quickest in Monza testing

MONZA, Italy, June 7 (AFP) - Dual Formula 1 world champion Mika Hakkinen was quickest in testing here Wednesday for the upcoming Canadian Grand Prix.

The Finn completed 36 laps in his McLaren-Mercedes, clocking 1min 24.518sec to come in ahead of Brazilian Pedro Paolo Diniz (Sauber) in 1:25.085 and Jarno Trulli of Italy (Jordan) in 1:25.213.

The ultra-focused Hakkinen declined to comment on his satisfactory day's work, leaving the track smartly after his session.

More in the mood for talking was his McLaren teammate David Coulthard, lying a dozen points off championship leader Michael Schumacher, and who posted the ninth quickest time here.

The Scot, on a high after his memorable Monaco win, told reporters: "This year Mika and Michael will have to figure with me. Things are going a lot better than they did in 1998. I'm finishing races and my car's the best it's ever been.

"This season, apart from Australia and Brazil, I've been in the points in each race, that's a sign that luck is on my side."

The author of Tuesday's best time, Rubens Barrichello in a Ferrari, slipped back into fourth quickest in 1:25.404.

The Montreal leg of the championship is on June 18.
