Fernandez wins wild Indy CART race

GOLD COAST, Australia, Oct 15 (AFP) - Mexico's Adrian Fernandez dodged explosions, crashes and spin outs to win a wild Indy 300 and close the gap on the CART drivers' championship title here Sunday.

Racing through the streets of Surfers Paradise, Fernandez took the flag ahead of Sweden's rookie Kenny Brack and US ace Jimmy Vasser.

The race turned into a war of attrition with only 13 of the 25 cars finishing.

At times it appeared like a bumper car convention as the tussle for the championship title turned reckless.

Three of the top guns were knocked out in a fiery first 10 seconds.

Under full throttle heading into the first chicane, CART Championship leader Gil de Ferran clipped the left rear wheel of pole winner, Juan Montoya.

The fracas also claimed defending Gold Coast Indy champion, Dario Franchitti.

De Ferran's wheel was bent out of shape and the frustrated Brazilian limped back to the pits with the worst possible result: zero points and his primary title contenders still on the course.

De Ferran heads into the final CART race on 153 points from Fernandez on 148.

It was Fernandez' second win of the season with his Ford Reynard.
