De Ferran grabs CART pole in Toronto

TORONTO, Canada, July 14 (AFP) - Reigning champion Gil de Ferran of Brazil edged compatriot Helio Castroneves for pole position during qualifying here Saturday for Sunday's Championship Auto Racing Teams Toronto Indy.

De Ferran completed the 1.75-mile temporary street course at 109.492 mph (175.187 k/hr) with Castroneves second at 109.370 mph (174.992 k/hr), each driving Honda-powered Reynards.

Sweden's Kenny Brack, the series points leader, was third, joined by Tony Kanaan of Brazil in row two. Brack has 84 points to 70 for Castroneves, 65 for Scotland's Dario Franchitti and 57 for de Ferran with up to 21 possible Sunday.

Canada's Alex Tagliani was fifth, followed in order by Franchitti, Mexico's Adrian Fernandez, Canada's Paul Tracy, Brazil's Roberto Moreno, rookie Scott Dixon of New Zealand, Spain's Oriol Servia and Canada's Patrick Carpentier.
