Andretti captures record seventh Toronto CART title

TORONTO, Canada, July 15 (AFP) - Michael Andretti captured his seventh career Toronto Indy, weaving his way through an incident-marred race from the back of the field to set a Championship Auto Racing Teams record.

Andretti overcame a bump at the start with rival Scott Dixon of New Zealand that dropped him to the rear of the field to achieve his record 41st career CART triumph, becoming the the first drive to win any CART race seven times.

"I thought I was done," Andretti said. "I thought I was going to go a lap down. The guys in the pits did a tremendous job keping me on the same lap.

"This is an unbelievable day."

Before a record 73,000 fans at a 1.75-mile temporary street course, Andretti won for the first time since taking the checkered flag here a year ago. His other Toronto triumphs came in 1989, 1991, 1992, 1994 and 1995.

Andretti also moved to second in the overall points chase, 11 behind pace-setter Kenny Brack of Sweden, who finished 20th.
