Adrian Fernandez wins CART Rio 200

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, April 30 (AFP) - Mexico's Adrian Fernandez, driving a Patrick Racing Ford-Reynard, won Sunday's Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) Rio 200 at the Emerson Fittipaldi Speedway on the outskirts of the city.

Fernandez inherited the victory from Canadian rookie Alex Tagliani, who started from pole and ominated much of the race before losing control on the 99th lap. His spin prompted a six-lap caution, and he spun again on the re-start with just three laps to go int he 108-lap race.

Fernandez took the lead on the 102nd lap and took the chequered flag under a caution ahead of American Jimmy Vasser and Canadian Paul Tracy.
